As director of
the clinical pathology division of Evanston Northwestern
Healthcare, I am involved in laboratory testing from three
hospitals, physician offices, and other clients. My principal
interest is Diagnostic Immunology and Flow Cytometry.
Structurally at our institution, immunology and flow cytometry
are integrated in a highly automated core laboratory together
with the traditional disciplines of biochemistry and hematology.
My research interests center on using clinical
laboratory techniques, such as flow cytometry, in collaboration
with clinical colleagues, to answer questions regarding
immunological mechanisms in various diseases. I enjoy teaching
MD and Ph.D. fellows how to formulate research questions, carry
out the work, and interpret and publish the results. I am
intimately involved in the training of medical technology
students, pathology residents, and clinical immunology fellows.
I advocate professional certification, continuing education, and
involvement in professional organizations. I serve on the
Diagnostic Immunology Resource Committee of the College of
American Pathologists and was a panelist on the NIH consensus
development conference on celiac disease. I enjoy the
administrative and financial aspects of my work and am willing
to teach anyone who has these interests—understanding the
economic aspects of laboratory medicine is critical to survival
and growth of the discipline. I have been working in clinical
immunology since 1973!
