Susan Orton received her PhD
in immunology from the College of Veterinary Medicine at North
Carolina State University in 2000. She completed a clinical
immunology fellowship under Dr. Jim Folds at University of North
Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She then
served as Assistant Director of the Clinical Immunology and Flow
Cytometry labs at UNC hospitals. Dr. Orton is currently an
Assistant Professor in the Division of Clinical Laboratory
Sciences at the UNC School of Medicine. She has developed the
curriculum and teaches the majority of the course work in the
newly established post-baccalaureate certificate program in
Molecular Diagnostic Sciences.
Her major interests include molecular diagnostics, clinical
immunology, and flow cytometry. Her research interests are
focused on using flow cytometry to determine early biomarkers of
asthma exacerbation in children with asthma. She is also has
adjunct faculty status at the College of Veterinary Medicine at
North Carolina State University where she is working with
colleagues to refine flow cytometry immunphenotypic markers for
use in veterinary medicine, primarily in dogs and cats.
She is a certified diplomat by the American Board of Medical
Laboratory Immunology and has been a member of AMLI since 2001.
She is currently chair of the Clinical Immunology Division of
ASM (Division V) and serves on the Board of Directors for the
North Carolina Society of Clinical Laboratory Scientists |
