John Schmitz received his
Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1991. He
subsequently completed post-doctoral training in the Medical
Laboratory Immunology Fellowship Program at UNC Hospitals (1993)
and in Clinical Histocompatibility testing (1999). Dr. Schmitz
is a diplomat of the American Board of Medical Laboratory
Immunology (ABMLI) and the American Board of Histocompatibility
and Immunogenetics (ABHI) and is currently Associate Professor
of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and Microbiology/Immunology
in the UNC School of Medicine and Director of the
Histocompatibility, Flow Cytometry and Clinical Immunology
Laboratories at UNC Hospitals. Dr. Schmitz also directs the UNC
Center for AIDS Research Immunology Core Laboratory in which he
conducts and supports collaborative research investigations in
HIV and other sexually transmitted infections as well as in
clinical transplantation. Dr. Schmitz is actively involved in
the training of Residents and Clinical Fellows at UNC Hospitals
and in the first year Medical Student curriculum and recently
assumed the role of Director of the CPEP accredited UNC
Hospitals Medical Laboratory Fellowship Program. Dr. Schmitz is
active in the AMLI (member since 1992) serving on annual meeting
program committees, as a counselor, and as a speaker. Dr.
Schmitz is also active in other professional organizations
including the ABMLI (board member and chair of the credentials
committee), ASM (past Division V chair and current council
member) and ASHI (member of the directors training review and
bylaws committees and incoming Regional Commissioner on the
Accreditation Review Board). |
